Tectonic Filament & UltiMaker Material Station Compatibility: What You Need to Know
Published July 1, 2026 | 3D3 Technology
If you're running Tectonic filament on an UltiMaker printer — especially with a Material Station — a couple of quick compatibility checks up front can save you time and frustration due to a spool that simply won't fit.
In This Article
Step 1: Verify the Filament Diameter
Before anything else, confirm which diameter of Tectonic filament you have. It matters more than it might seem — the wrong diameter simply won't feed correctly, regardless of printer brand.
2.85 mm
✅ Compatible with UltiMaker printers
1.75 mm
❌ Not compatible with UltiMaker brand printers
Works with many other desktop 3D printers — always verify the required diameter with your printer manufacturer.
💡 Quick tip: Every UltiMaker printer — the S-Series and Factor 4 lineup included — requires 2.85 mm filament. The Sketch Series printers are the only exception. If you're not sure what's on the spool in front of you, check the printed label or the spool's product page before loading it.
Step 2: Verify the Spool Size
Diameter is only half the equation. Not every spool size will physically fit inside it. The Material Station has fixed maximum dimensions:
Material Station Maximum Dimensions
70 mm width × 203 mm diameter
✅ Compatible Spool Sizes
| Spool Size | Diameter | Width |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 kg | 160 mm | ≈ 50 mm |
| 0.75 kg | 200 mm | 55 mm |
| 1 kg | 200 mm | 68 mm |
❌ Spool Sizes That Won't Fit
The following spool sizes exceed the Material Station's maximum dimensions and will not fit:
These larger spools are still great options if you're loading filament manually on the printer's external spool holder — they just won't sit inside the Material Station's internal bays.
Get the Right Filament the First Time
UltiMaker and 3D3 Technology stocks 2.85 mm Tectonic filament in Material Station-compatible spool sizes, ready to ship anywhere in the USA.
Remember, if the filament doesnt fit the Material Station, you can simply use the spool holder on the back of the printer.

Two checks, every time: confirm you have 2.85 mm Tectonic filament for your UltiMaker printer, then confirm the spool size fits the Material Station's 70 mm × 203 mm footprint if you're using one. The 0.5 kg, 0.75 kg, and 1 kg spools are cleared for the Material Station — 2 kg and larger are not.
